At the beginning of this schoolyear SPARK organised a fieldtrip for an international group of students of the master Sustainable Entrepreneurship. We started at BOWINN, Dokkum, where Petra Boorsma of the Biosintrum and Nick Boersma of Circular Friesland told about the possibilities and dilemmas farmers and builders face in the biobased transition. We then had a very interesting tour in Westergeest, by farmer Jan Hania who showed us their cattail plant. The weather was lovely, as well as the lunch that was offered! Finally we moved over to Opnieuw. Here students could have an insight view in what sustainable entrepreneurship means to Douwe Jan Boermsa (CEO), who gave a lecture as well as a tour through this very intersting company.

After the excursion the students worked on new business models that can be derived from cattail – a miraculous crop with many possibiliites! The business models are now explored by students of the master Environment & Energy Management (TU Twente, Leeuwarden) and then be prototyped by students of Aeres & Firda.
